Press Play to Watch Charlie’s Story

Charlie Byrd of Rock River Environmental Services and his fellow RRES waste haulers work year-round in all conditions, including driving rain, blowing snow and blistering heat. Charlie collects up to 40,000 lbs of garbage per day. A daily haul of recyclables can weigh up to 12,000 lbs. And yard work season can mean shifts last 10 hours or more as drivers pick up the grass, weeds and tree clippings that citizens place at the curb. It’s all in a day’s work for Charlie Byrd and his hard-working colleagues.

Rockford Recycle Container Delivery

ROCKFORD – The City of Rockford and Rock River Disposal have announced plans to begin distribution of new recycling containers to begin on Monday, March 17, 2014. The containers are included in the garbage collection contract awarded to Rock River Disposal by City Council in late 2013. The containers are being provided to residents at no additional cost. The blue, 32 gallon container will nearly double the volume of the current 18 gallon bin with hopes of facilitating increased recycling, thus reducing unnecessary material deposited into the landfill. Existing recycling bins are not scheduled for pickup and may be utilized by residents.

It is estimated that approximately 1,300 recycling containers will be delivered daily, taking anywhere between 8-9 weeks to complete all deliveries. The proposed drop off routing will begin in Southwest Rockford (Wednesday garbage collection day) followed by Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday garbage collection days. Recycling containers will be delivered Monday – Friday during the delivery schedule. The public will be updated weekly as to areas delivered and those scheduled for delivery the following week.
